40 YEARS OF OPENING DOORS
Since 1985, Tender Mercies has been more than a housing provider, we've been a pathway home. Every key we hand over unlocks not just a home, but a future worth building. This anniversary, help us continue opening doors for those who need it most.
1985
Fr. Chris Hall, Randy La Fond and Ed Slater founded Tender Mercies
One building of thirteen single room apartments for homeless women opens
1986
9 people employed full time by Tender Mercies
1987
In partnership with the Mental Health Board we received a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to rehab the old Dana Hotel.
1989
Chris Hall founded CUP, Catholics United for the Poor, and 6 agencies were members. Tender Mercies still receives support from CUP.
1990
May 17, 1990 - Pleasant House dedication
June 7, 1990 - Dana Hotel opens
The Franciscan Friars gave Tender Mercies an interest free loan to purchase the Elm St. building, about 4 years later they forgave the debt.
1992
First annual TeeUP for Tender Mercies
First RSW position posted under “Resident Specialist.” Pay rate $5.50/hr.
1993
Marcia Spaeth-Kennedy named one of the Cincinnati Enquirer’s Woman of the Year for her work with Tender Mercies - especially her capital fundraising.
March 4, 1993 - Marcia Spaeth-Kennedy awarded the Pearl Gantz Award for Service for her work at Tender Mercies.
1995
Tender Mercies 10th Anniversary
1996
Renovation begins on Tender Mercies’ 12th street building, housing 39 additional residents
1998
Haven Hall (now known as Spaeth and Kelly) opens
2000
Tender Mercies forms the Substance Abuse Task Force to help residents deal with chemical dependency problems.
Celebritrees event kicks off as fundraising program for the agency.
2004
The Rec Center is renamed Harkavy Hall in honor of Frank Harkavy
2009

Started “Young Professionals” Associate Board
2013
Tender Mercies presents the First Annual Taste of OTR event
2015
Launched the AfterCare and Peer Support program.
Tender Mercies becomes accredited for meeting OANO standards of excellence
2020
821 Flats opens in January, with 57 new units
2021
Annual formal gala transitions to Halloween BASH
2024
Slater Hall opens in January, with 62 new units
Renovation on Spaeth and Kelly Hall commences
